Biology, AP Biology, Anatomy, Physiology, Physics, Chemistry, STEM & Career Tech teachers: Show students how multiple science disciplines combine with engineering design in Ohio’s thriving life sciences careers.
This 45-minute Zoom visit to AtriCure’s Mason, Ohio headquarters will show how heart surgery devices are designed, tested and assembled! AtriCure’s groundbreaking technologies reduce post-surgery pain and are transforming the treatment of irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation or Afib) and related conditions around the globe.
John Dreyer, VP, Manufacturing Engineering, will guide students through cutting-edge biomedical engineering processes while answering questions and sharing career pathways in the biomedical field.
Students will:
• Know…how engineering innovators design, test & assemble medical devices
• Understand…what skills, knowledge & pathways lead to careers in the medical device industry
• Be able to…connect engineering principals to life sciences innovation & identify related careers in the biomedical industry
Perfect for classes studying:
• HS-ETS1-1 Analyze a major global challenge to specify qualitative/quantitative criteria and constraints for solutions that account for societal needs/wants.
Cross-Cutting Concepts:
• Structure and Function: How the design of medical devices relates to their function in treating patients
• Systems and System Models: Understanding how medical devices function as part of larger healthcare systems
• Cause and Effect: How engineering design choices affect patient outcomes
This virtual visit is sponsored by Ohio Life Sciences & the BioPathways program.
